Preface

By Wang Heming

The art of healing and martial arts originated from the same source. If one looks at the history of Chinese civilization, he can find numerous people who were good at both medical skills and martial arts. The orthopedics and traumatology of traditional Chinese medical sciences absorb the technique and skills of twisting of joints in martial arts, or Wushu, while the art of attack and defense in Wush and practice of Wushu have become the methods to fend off diseases and illness. The combination of medical sciences and martial arts has resulted in innumerable unexpected and surprising results in curing patients of diseases, and thus became a real priceless heritage of Chinese civilization.

Mr. Zhang Dayong began learning both Wushu and Chinese medical sciences in his childhood time. He later served as a Wushu coach for several decades. At the same time, he made in-depth studies of Chinese medical sciences in which he accumulated a lot of experience and knowledge. What is particularly outstanding about his career is his experiment in using Wushu action to diagnose and cure diseases and to perform health-promoting massage. His creative methods of combining medical and Wushu arts have brought about an independent school of medical sciences, which have proved very effective in clinical experiments.
It is praiseworthy that with the publishing of the series of books entitled ¡§Kungfu Treatment of Spine¡¨, ¡§Kungfu Finger Treatment¡¨, ¡§Kungfu Massage¡¨ and ¡§Kungfu Foot Massage¡¨, Mr. Zhang is now making public his rate arts of attack and defense in Wushu which he learned from a private Kungfu master, as well as his secret methods for diagnosing and curing diseases, plus the arts and methods of treatment of spine and massage which were theorized by himself through years of experiment and practice. The four books include both explanation in simple language to teach people how to learn these skills, and a lot of illustrations to make the learning easy for beginners to master these skills. Therefore I regard the publishing of these books as an important event for both Chinese medical sciences and Wushu circles.

(The author is an expert of orthopedics of traditional Chinese medical sciences and vice-president of Fujian Chinese Medical Sciences University.)
